All You Need to Know About Gum Lift
WHAT IS GUM LIFT ?
It is a cosmetic procedure performed to reduce the “gummy smile” . By gummy smile we mean that the gums of an individual show more than what should be visible while talking, smiling, laughing etc. It is a discrepancy between white(teeth) and pink (gum). People that require a gum lift often complain that their teeth appear too small or too short. Gum lift is exactly what it term suggests, it essentially involves exposing more of the natural tooth structure covered under the gum making teeth longer and enhances the patient’s smile,
REASONS FOR TEETH – GUM DISCREPANCY:
There are number of reasons that may cause a gummy smile :
- Shape and size of the teeth
- Excessive maxilla
- Excessive gum tissue
- Shape and size of the lip
- Conditions and shape of facial muscle
THE PROCEDURE:
It is a simple procedure which involves re-contouring of the gum tissue,it may sometimes require removal of bone tissue also. There are three ways of doing this procedure, the traditional way which is performed with scalpel after giving anesthesia. But with the advent of lasers in dentistry this procedure has become very conservative and can be performed with much ease and without any discomfort to the patient. LASER gum lift is a painless, non-invasive procedure not requiring any sutures and the gum healing is six to eight times faster. Thirdly BOTOX is an excellent product to manage a gummy smile in a totally non invasive manner. It acts by relaxing the muscle and prevents excessive pulling of the upper lip thereby decreasing the excessive gum show.
